PRO MODS RETURN TO MISSION

One of the most popular classes in all of drag racing hits the track at Mission Raceway Park this weekend.

That class is Pro Modified, and these wild-and-wooly cars, the fastest in the world with fully functioning doors as opposed to one-piece bodies, are the headliners in the Vancouver Community College Transportation Trades Pro Mod Challenge and Street Car Shootout, presented by Boston Pizza in Mission, the last appearance by these cars at Mission this season.

One dozen of these 225-mph monsters will attempt to qualify for the 8-car final field. As always, the Pro Mod cars will be either the supercharged alcohol-burning type, or the carbureted, gasoline-powered versions with nitrous oxide assist. Very different cars, but very similar performance, and fans can pick their favourite type to cheer for.

Approximately half the entries consist of Canadians, with local drivers leading the way. From Richmond comes Glen May and his Cranberry Connection Ford Ranger. Trevor Lowe will represent Agassiz and the Fraser Valley with his veteran ’57 Chevy. And Jay Syvertsen brings his Chevy pickup from Surrey.

In addition to the Pro Modified cars, a co-feature at Mission will be the Street Car Shootout. The fastest street-legal cars in the West will be scorching the Mission quarter-mile. Several cars have already busted into the six-second zone at over 200 mph at Mission, and they are all expected to battle this weekend for street legal supremacy. Locals Rash Dhaliwal and Dal Sangha lead the Canadian contingent against the American invaders. Five other classes of street cars will also compete in the biggest event of the year for these cars.

Completing the program will be the Canada West Doorslammer cars, Stock/Super Stock Eliminator, and the latest round of the local ET Bracket Racing Series.

This will be one of the most action-packed weekends of the racing season at Mission, a true racing happening for the hard-core fan.

Qualifying for the Pro Mods will be held on Saturday at noon, 2:00 and 4:00, while final eliminations will go Sunday at noon. Admission is $15 each day including pit pass. Children 12 and under, accompanied by an adult, get in free.

Mission Raceway Park is located on Highway 11 between the Mission Bridge and the Lougheed Highway.

Canada’s Biggest NHRA Drag Race This Weekend at Mission Raceway Park

Mission, B.C., August 3, 2005 – The biggest drag race event of the summer rolls into Mission Raceway Park this weekend, with the running of the Lucas Oil Summer Nationals, Round 5 of the 2005 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series in the Northwest Division.

Preceding it on Thursday will be the conclusion of the Lordco B.C. Nationals which were rained out in May, with the same racers making for the biggest double-header race weekend in Canadian and NHRA sportsman drag racing history. From Thursday to Sunday, then, Mission Raceway Park will rock with B.C.’s largest motorsport event of the year.

Topping the list of entrants are the awesome Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars, 4,000-horsepower monsters that run the quarter mile in 5 seconds approaching speeds of 270 mph. Some twenty of these cars are entered, each looking for a qualifying spot in their respective 8-car fields.

Many of these cars and drivers are nationally competitive, and are racing for the points that could get them into the NHRA Top Ten in their classes. Indeed, Steve Federlin of Oregon currently leads the national points in Top Alcohol Dragster after his big victory in the National event two weeks ago in Seattle, and he will attempt to add to his lead with a victory at Mission.

The action will be non-stop at the Summer Nationals, and when the Dragsters and Funny Cars take a break, a few hundred of the best sportsman racers in B.C. will take on the invaders from Alberta and the West Coast of the U.S. in several different eliminator categories.

It’s three days packed with racing action, starting each morning, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at 9:00 am. The feature Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars have qualifying sessions at 3:00 pm Friday, and noon and 4:00 pm Saturday, and their first round of eliminations goes Sunday at noon.

Friday’s admission of just $10.00 includes pit pass, while Saturday and Sunday admission is $20.00 each day, plus $5.00 for pit pass.

300+ photo coverage of Oldtime Drags starts here PLEASE NOTE: We have tried to include as many images as possible, but cannot promise every single vehicle at such a large event can be included. The reasons are many from people jumping in front of the camera, to simple missed opportunities to the fact our single photographer has many other duties throughout the event. We managed over 600 images at this event but time permits only what you see here to be included. With five other photographers at this event we're certain if your car is not included here somebody else will have something for you. Also, because of the recent hectic schedule of races the webmmaster had the choice of including far fewer photos than what you'll see with captions or many more without captions. It's a situation where we cannot please everyone, but felt we chose the option to include the most images over details of each image.

The Good Old Days of Racing Return to Mission!

Mission, B.C., July 27, 2005 - There are few sports that make remembering the “old days” as easy to do as drag racing, with its rich tradition and reverence for old cars, and this weekend is the chance for fans to relive the glory days when the Langley Loafers present the 14th Annual Re/Max B.C. Oldtime Drags at Mission Raceway Park.

This is the only event at Mission this season for cars of pre-1971 design only, although for reasons of safety and reliability, they have all been brought up to current equipment standards.

Highlighting the Re/Max B.C. Oldtime Drags is the return appearance of the famous AA/Supercharged Gassers Association. These ‘30’s and ‘40’s era cars such as Willys and Austin feature huge supercharged engines which, when combined with the short and tall designs of them, result in crowd-pleasing displays as their drivers wrestle them to the end of the quarter mile at speeds approaching 200 mph.

About a dozen of these cool old cars will be launching down the strip at Mission this weekend, along with hundreds of other hot rods, dragsters, and muscle cars racing in several different classes. A special match race will see B.C.’s two top Pro Modified drivers, Trevor Lowe and Glen May, in 220-mph combat.

There will be plenty to see and do off the track, too, at the Re/Max B.C. Oldtime Drags, as one of the area’s largest Show and Shines will fill the Mission pits to overflowing with customs, street rods and muscle cars all weekend long.

With the sunny weather forecast, there could be no better way for an old car enthusiast to spend a beautiful summer weekend. It’ll be an action-packed two days, with something for every fan of old race cars. Gates open Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 am. Qualifying for the Gassers goes at noon, 2:00 and 4:00 pm Saturday, and their first round of eliminations begins Sunday at noon followed by all the other classes of racing.

Admission on either Saturday or Sunday is only $15.00, including pit pass. Children 12 and under are free.

My apologies for not posting any updated track points, it was a combination of your webmaster not being awake to the fact there was a track points race that weekend along with the 'points person' being in not one, but two car accidents just previous to that race which forced her to miss that weekend entirely resulting in a slight communication breakdown. Plans are to get a hardcopy of the points asap which means I will have to enter in each and every record manually, so it will take some time. In the future please feel free to inquire directly to me if you have any questions regarding points, etc. It was only today that I was finally contacted by a racer. This could have been dealt with much sooner had I known. Again my apologies for this, it will not happen again. -Larry Pfister, Webmaster.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the extended program at the Lucas weekend August 3-7 there is no Ford race as some older schedules state. Track officials are also working to reschedule the Junior race originally scheduled for that weekend. More info will be posted as we get it. Any questions regarding these two issues should be directed be sent to the track office via e-mail or phone 604-826-6315 or toll free 1-877-826-6315.

Fuel Altereds Highlight NHRA National Open at Mission

Mission, B.C. – It’s become a mid-summer tradition at Mission Raceway Park, and the NHRA National Open Presented by Lucas Oil Products of Canada this weekend will have something for every taste in drag racing.

Heading up the program is the first appearance at Mission of the nitro-fuelled AA/Fuel Altereds, vintage race cars with their roots in the 1960s. Based on a chassis with a very short wheelbase and high centre of gravity, and with a Ford Model T or similar old body style, these cars are inherently difficult to drive. Add a fire-breathing 3,000-horsepower Chrysler hemi engine to them, and stand back! Their antics, as they wheelstand and slide around barely on the edge of control, are the stuff of drag racing legend.

Western Canada is a hotbed for the modern alcohol-fueled dragsters and funny cars, and a dozen of B.C. and Alberta’s fastest cars will be on hand in a unique racing format that will see the quickest of each type of car face off for all the prize money and a coveted NHRA “Wally” trophy on Sunday afternoon.

The best field ever assembled at Mission is expected to be on hand for the Street Car Shootout. The fastest, the Pro Street cars, all street-legal, can run deep into the six-second range at over 200 mph. Local stars Rash Dhaliwal and Dal Sangha will pit their Mustangs against American invaders like Jeremy Devier, Brian Lane and Garrett Richards, and the racing should be the most intense yet seen at Mission.

For the hardcore fans of the local Mission racers, all the regular NHRA classes will be running for trophies as well, including those wheelstanding Super Stock muscle cars and the wickedly fast Top Comp dragsters.

It’ll be an action-packed weekend, with something for every racing fan.

  • Gates open Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 am.
  • The Fuel Altereds run five times over the weekend – at 2:00, 7:00 and 9:30 pm on Saturday, and at noon and 4:00 pm Sunday.

Note that the racing program extends into the evening Saturday, so that fans can watch the nitro-powered Fuel Altereds after dusk, when the flames can be seen shooting out of their exhausts.

The Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars have qualifying sessions at 4:00 and 9:00 pm Saturday, and their first round of eliminations goes Sunday at noon followed by all the other classes.

Admission on either Saturday or Sunday is $15.00, plus $5.00 for pit pass. Children under 12 are free with an adult.

Mission Raceway Park is located on Highway 11 between the Mission Bridge and the Lougheed Highway.

Mission traction strikes again! Dragbike wheelstand outta control!

Drag bike history today at MRP

Langley BC rider Chris Gartman made drag bike history today as he rode a rear-engine machine to victory in the Top Fuel category of the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association's third race of 2005.

The one-of-a-kind nitro-powered entry got by a troubled Ron Houniet in the money run 7.096/188.63 mph as the perennial Canadian champion from Maple Ridge BC overpowered the surface at the 1000 ft. mark for the second straight round and shut off early with an 8.19/117 mph run.
