Mission traction strikes again! Dragbike wheelstand outta control!

Drag bike history today at MRP

Langley BC rider Chris Gartman made drag bike history today as he rode a rear-engine machine to victory in the Top Fuel category of the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association's third race of 2005.

The one-of-a-kind nitro-powered entry got by a troubled Ron Houniet in the money run 7.096/188.63 mph as the perennial Canadian champion from Maple Ridge BC overpowered the surface at the 1000 ft. mark for the second straight round and shut off early with an 8.19/117 mph run.

Earlier Houniet set a new CMDRA Top Fuel ET record with a fantastic 6.583/213.47 mph second round win over Jody York. Gartman came oh-so-close to the magic six second zone for the first time in round one while defeating Jim Flower when the unusual back-motored combo ran a 7.000!

It was Gartman's second final after runnering-up in the CMDRA season opener in Ashcroft, while Houniet is fresh off a win at the second race in Edmonton where he reset the track record book.

Jim Flower took the Image Racing Top Fuel Shoot-out 7.18/157 over Steve McTiernan's 7.58/180.

In Pro Modified it was Gord Smith on his turbo Kawasaki running 7.782/184.27 mph as Texas rider Mike Lozano in his amazing one-off all-motor V-Twin piece slowed to a 10.97 after a string of seven fifties.

Pro Dragster went to John Breckenridge who strapped a 7.60/174 on John Black's 8.31/162. Breckenridge earlier set a new class mark with a first round 7.405 in the cooler morning air.

Doug Ainsworth won Modified over Karen Beauchemin. Sorry, no final round times available. Ainsworth also had Low ET and Top Speed at 8.111/161.69 mph

The hotly-contested Street Bike Shoot-out was all Ethan Barkley as the Calgary rider defeated Tom Tourand in the final. Again, computer glitches resulted in no numbers available at this time. Barkley deep into the eight second zone set a record. Numbers we hope to have confirmed asap.

Kerry Lockhart won Super Gas in the only street-legal bike in the field running 10.89 on the 10.20 dial as Chris Dockrey fouled a 10.75 away.

Jeff Knowles won the Power Twins Shoot-out 9.10/145.67 over Dean Larouche's 9.86/131.40 mph.

Patti Brandle won XL over Katie Breckenridge, Ken Froese won Street over Dave Kasper and in Super Bike it was Wayne Evenson over Len Darnell who was unable to make the call after a wild finish line explosion the previous round that resulted in the entire left side of the Suzuki engine coming apart at speed. The end of the crankshaft actually hitting Darnell in the left knee. Despite the carnage he was able to keep the bike upright, was taken to the hospital for observation but was back soon to head home.

All-in-all a great day of motorcycle drag racing with the CMDRA. Don't forget to return here over the next few days as we post some photos, videos from the bike drags as well as the delayed results from last weekend's Mega Ford Weekend.

Attention Westwood Motorcycles racing Club Members
The Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association (CMDRA) would like to offer all Westwood Motorcycle Racing Club licensed road racers the opportunity to come out and race with them this weekend July 2-3rd at Mission Raceway Park. The CMDRA would like to see you go straight!

The cost for the weekend is only the price of admission, which is $30.00 for the weekend. The race entry fees for WMRC licensed racers will be free at this race!

In the CMDRA program you must qualify on Saturday in order to race on Sunday, in other words you can't just show up on Sunday. CMDRA will accept your licenses straight across and as far as helmets, safety gear etc. WMRC racers need only meet CMDRA requirements.

If you are interested can go to www.cmdra.com to check out the rule book for classes etc. The only thing that may be an issue is that if you have a bike that does not have the "Tip over, shut off" feature. You would have to rig a "kill switch" which the CMDRA tech guys would help you do right at the track.

There is also a Saturday morning Race School at 9:30 a.m.that CMDRA officials would ask all participating WMRC racers to take to learn about the Xmas Tree starting system and a couple of points that will be different from what they may be used to on the road course.

Registration is Saturday morning (starting at 8:00 a.m.). All that's require is a signature on the waiver and then you would have to get your bike teched.

If you have any questions please contact the CMDRA office @ (604) 580-9008 or long distance toll free 1-877-580-9008.

Also if you are not member of WMRC you can still come out and take the school then if you are interested pay $20.00 race in Street for the weekend.

Lowe Wins Pro Mod after spectacular first round run

Report & Photos now on full result page

Agassiz veteran Trevor Lowe won today's Pepsi Pro Mod Challenge final, a 6.91/186 single after Lee Smith hurt his engine in a semi final win over Jay Syvertson and could not make the call. Lowe got by Wayne Hofer after a shock in the opening stanza when number one qualifier Pat Stoken crossed the centerline beside the Alberta Chevy II, who was on it's way to a best ever pass of 6.84/201.83.

In round one Lowe, in the familiar family-owned blown 1957 Chevrolet, skated down the right lane, most of it on two wheels. Running beside a slowing Vern Mills, it was a run people were talking about long into the night.

In Pro Street it was all Jeremy Devier as the Arlington WA team capped off a fourteen hit weekend with the quickest run in the history of Northwest racing, a round one single 6.725/207.94! His final round 6.794/207.94 win was over the world's quickest and fastest street legal pickup of Garrett Richards, who had a 7.359/186.37.

Another driver named Trevor won, as Willms took his gorgeous Lynwood Washington based '70 Nova SS to the win in Outlaw 7.907/171.91 over Roy Moznik's 8.194/162.51 in the family El Camino.

Troy Pike took ET Street .514/10.23 on a 10.05 to Gabe Boran's .008/12.571 breakout of his 12.60 dial-in.

Canada West Doorslammer saw Terry Shufilta bring his '89 IROC over from Victoria to win another great door car race over Marysville WA driver Mike Bedsworth. Both drivers ran their numbers with the Camaro's .020/8.38/8.389/161.60 mph just enough for the '96 Olds' .071/7.51/7.512/182.81.

MOTORSPORT MADNESS AT MISSION

Mission, B.C., June 8, 2005 – One of the most popular classes in all of drag racing hits the track at Mission Raceway Park this weekend. That class is Pro Modified, and these wild-and-wooly cars, the fastest in the world with fully functioning doors as opposed to one-piece bodies, are the headliners in the Pepsi Pro Mod Challenge, a West Coast Pro Mod Association series race.

A dozen of these 225-mph monsters, which are either supercharged and alcohol-burning or carbureted with nitrous oxide, will attempt to qualify for the 8-car final field, which could lead to what many are predicting will be personal-best performances by most of the racers, especially if the weather stays cool.

More than half the entries consist of Canadians, and three B.C. drivers will uphold local honour. Trevor Lowe will represent Agassiz and the Fraser Valley with his fan-favourite ’57 Chevy. Jay Syvertsen comes out of Surrey with his radical ’56 Chevy pickup. And Keith Korecki brings his wicked Shelby Mustang down from Kelowna.

Other Canadian racers taking on the invaders from the United States hail from Alberta and Saskatchewan, making this the biggest race of its kind on the West Coast this year.

In addition to the Pro Modified cars, a co-feature at Mission will be the Street Car Shootout presented by Boston Pizza and Flowmaster. The fastest street-legal cars in the West will all be at Mission, including the wild, 200-mph Mustangs of Rash Dhaliwal and Dal Sangha.

Not only that, the Lucas Oil Canada West Doorslammer Association, featuring 7-second cars that could be called “baby” Pro Mods, will run its third event of the season at Mission, and the wild wheelstanding Super Stock muscle cars will also be on track, making for an event tailor-made for fans of fast “stock-looking” cars.

This will be one of the most action-packed weekends of the racing season at Mission, a true racing happening.

Qualifying will be held on Saturday with the first Pro Mod session at noon, while final eliminations will begin Sunday at noon. Admission is $15 each day, including pit pass.

Please note, the MRP Webmaster will be in Ashcroft tomorrow for the CMDRA race, so results may be later Sunday evening, or possibly even Monday.

Update: Due to continuing showers, tonight's MOPAC Performance street legals are officially canceled. Not only the rain, but thunder and lightening (which have caused damage here in the past) are in the immediate area.

Links to a number of Lordco BC National photo pages are now posted here.

This weekend sees the first race for the Canadian Pro Street Association along with a number of other classes and brackets on the drag strip. Tonight the street legal competitors take over the MRP quarter mile.

Over on the Motocross track you can see qualifying action for the upcoming Nationals then holiday Monday finds the motorcycles taking over the road course for the second time this year.

It's a full weekend of racing action at Mission Raceway Park, gates open 8:00 a.m. all three days, see you there!

Monday May 16, 2005

Rain forced the postponement of Sunday's Lordco Auto Parts BC Nationals NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Mission Raceway Park. Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car and Super Comp were unable to complete opening rounds of competition Saturday, with all other classes into round two.

The event will be completed on Thursday, August 4, making for a giant double-header with our second Lucas Oil Series event August 5, 6 and 7. There will be a test day on Wednesday, August 3, then Thursday all remaining competitors will receive one time run before going into eliminations.

For complete coverage of this past weekend's action check out dragracecentral.com, and speedzonemagazine.com.

Move-in pit photos now posted here

Activities begin today for what many consider the biggest drag race of the year at Mission Raceway Park. The racers will roll into the property all day, eyes glancing to the sky. Please note that in the event of a rain delay eliminations will go Monday.

Today sees not only the pits beginning to fill up but a charity golf tournament at Sand Piper Golf and Country Club in beautiful Harrison Mills organized by Speedzone Magazine. Tomorrow is test and tune day with a number of stars planning to attend including the West Coast Hemi Team and a number of Dragsters and Funny Cars.

Spectators are reminded that action begins early each day with gates open to them at 8:00 a.m. The racer gate opens at 7:00 a.m. Remember the Friday and Saturday morning sessions include Stock along with Super Stock and because of the good air are often quite spectacular.

Though we will try to post something each day, it all depends on the schedule and how it goes. Please note calling the track by phone may be very, very busy from here on, so please utilize the track's webcam for the latest on track conditions. In the event of major delays we will attempt to post here.

Tonight's MOPAC Street Legals, Points & more...
The weather looks great for Friday number five of the 2005 MOPAC Performance Street Legal Drag Race Series. Your webmaster will unfortunately not be on hand this night as we are already sitting on a ton of photos we are still working to post from last week. And yes, we are aware of the points problems. That is currently in the hands of the office/tower staff, we hope to have it solved by the next bracket race.
PHOTO - Tom Tourand ran 8.90s over 166 mph on street legal no-wheelie-bar Hyabusa April 29. The CMDRA is sponsoring the motorcycle portion of the 2005 Friday night street legal events, and thanks to their own very successful Street Bike Shoot-out series has given the rocket-ship class one more venue to come out, run hard and put on a spectacular show.

NHRA LORDCO BC NATIONALS Notes:

It's less than one week away from the year's biggest race, the NHRA LORDCO BC NATIONALS with entries pouring in at a very healthy pace. Among the alcohol classes perhaps the biggest news being the confirmation that Hillery Will will be here with her Bucky Austin-tuned Top Alcohol Dragster. Look for qualifying to be wild affair with more than full fields expected in both categories.

One of the most popular components of this race is the now legendary West Coast Super Stock Hemi Shoot-out. For 2005 that legend continues for it is well known that at least one team is aiming to make history here one more time.

There is little doubt today who has the quickest SS/AA on Earth, and when 70-something Harry Holton of Modesto California pulls 'HarCuda' into the Mission staging beams he, and a host of others, will have but one goal in mind, a sub-eight-and-a-half-second ride to the end of 1320 feet.

There is high anticipation that the eight-forty mark will fall here next weekend, but Holton isn't the only big bad Hemi car coming back to MRP. Of course the other WCH Cudas of Michael Ogburn and Jerry Jenkins will be here, as will maybe the coolest car drag car in Canada, the Lee Bros. all black SS/A '68 Hemi Cuda from Red Deer Alberta. After a sad '04 when a family car accident forced them leave here before making a run, and a wet '03, Alyn Lee will bring the most feared Hemi stick car in the world to the track he loves. If all goes well look for a number of SS/A cars to be here.

You can currently find out much more about the Shoot-out at Speedzone Magazine Online.

Together with big fields of both Comp and Figspeed Top Comp, the Motorcycles, the Bracket cars, all the Super cars and much more expect a full tilt weekend of drag racing that'll have something for everyone!

Look for regular updates here right up to practice day Thursday May 12, followed by coverage all four days, and even more to follow.
