Drag bike history today at MRP

Langley BC rider Chris Gartman made drag bike history today as he rode a rear-engine machine to victory in the Top Fuel category of the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association's third race of 2005.

The one-of-a-kind nitro-powered entry got by a troubled Ron Houniet in the money run 7.096/188.63 mph as the perennial Canadian champion from Maple Ridge BC overpowered the surface at the 1000 ft. mark for the second straight round and shut off early with an 8.19/117 mph run. (complete story with links to photos and video)

Earlier Houniet set a new CMDRA Top Fuel ET record with a fantastic 6.583/213.47 mph second round win over Jody York. Gartman came oh-so-close to the magic six second zone for the first time in round one while defeating Jim Flower when the unusual back-motored combo ran a 7.000!

It was Gartman's second final after runnering-up in the CMDRA season opener in Ashcroft, while Houniet is fresh off a win at the second race in Edmonton where he reset the track record book.

Jim Flower took the Image Racing Top Fuel Shoot-out 7.18/157 over Steve McTiernan's 7.58/180.

In Pro Modified it was Gord Smith on his turbo Kawasaki running 7.782/184.27 mph as Texas rider Mike Lozano in his amazing one-off all-motor V-Twin piece slowed to a 10.97 after a string of seven fifties.

Pro Dragster went to John Breckenridge who strapped a 7.60/174 on John Black's 8.31/162. Breckenridge earlier set a new class mark with a first round 7.405 in the cooler morning air.

Doug Ainsworth won Modified over Karen Beauchemin. Sorry, no final round times available. Ainsworth also had Low ET and Top Speed at 8.111/161.69 mph

The hotly-contested Street Bike Shoot-out was all Ethan Barkley as the Calgary rider defeated Tom Tourand in the final. Again, computer glitches resulted in no numbers available at this time. Barkley deep into the eight second zone set a record. Numbers we hope to have confirmed asap.

Kerry Lockhart won Super Gas in the only street-legal bike in the field running 10.89 on the 10.20 dial as Chris Dockrey fouled a 10.75 away.

Jeff Knowles won the Power Twins Shoot-out 9.10/145.67 over Dean Larouche's 9.86/131.40 mph.

Patti Brandle won XL over Katie Breckenridge, Ken Froese won Street over Dave Kasper and in Super Bike it was Wayne Evenson over Len Darnell who was unable to make the call after a wild finish line explosion the previous round that resulted in the entire left side of the Suzuki engine coming apart at speed. The end of the crankshaft actually hitting Darnell in the left knee. Despite the carnage he was able to keep the bike upright, was taken to the hospital for observation but was back soon to head home.

All-in-all a great day of motorcycle drag racing with the CMDRA. Don't forget to return here over the next few days as we post some photos, videos from the bike drags as well as the delayed results from last weekend's Mega Ford Weekend.
