SHIELDS, THOMPSON OUTLAST THE COMPETITION AT MISSION RACEWAY

MISSION, B.C. – Because of the ominous weather forecast for Sunday, NHRA and Mission Raceway officials opted to complete eliminations of the Lordco BC Nationals on Saturday. The race, which is the second of six NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events on the Northwest division schedule, kicked off on Friday. In the end, Duane Shields outlasted the Top Alcohol Dragster field and Clint Thompson bested his Top Alcohol Funny Car competitors.

Shields, who reset both ends of the track record with a 5.213-second, 274.13 mph pass during qualifying, beat reigning division champion Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., in the final. Boulder City, Nev., resident Shields made a 5.273-second, 271.16 mph pass which eclipsed Federlin’s 5.447-second, 264.31 mph effort. Federlin was the No. 2 qualifier at the event.

On his march to the final round against Northwest Hitter Bucky Austin, No. 4 qualifier Thompson, who resides in Klammath Falls, Ore., picked off Chilliwack resident Tim Nemeth in the opening round of eliminations. In the semis, Thompson faced top qualifier, Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., and beat him, 5.677 seconds at 251.32 mph to 5.742 seconds at 254.59 mph. Facing Austin in the final round Thompson laid down a 5.715-second, 251.39 mph pass that was more than enough to cover the defending division champ who ran 6.080 seconds at 201.20 mph.

In Comp Eliminator, Adam Bowdish, Oregon City, Ore., beat Jirka Kaplan of Calgary, Alb., and in Super Stock, Spruce Grove, Alb., resident Don Thomas scored the win over Sean Cour of Bush Prairie Wash. Stock Eliminator racer Cory Thompson of Abbottsford, B.C., switched on the win light over Black Creek, B.C., resident Jim Mantle. Brad Plourd of Kent, Wash., earned the trophy in Super Comp over Anthony Castillo, Grandview, Wash., and in Super Gas, Rod Andreas, Gervais, Ore., was the victor, besting Ross Childers of Gladstone, Ore. Super Street competitor Dick Williams, Puyallup, Wash., beat Seattle’s Fred Hoffman in the final and in Sportsman Motorcycle, Dave Rathbun, Oak Harbor, Wash., defeated Jim Sibley, Edmonds, Wash., and Top Comp’s Todd Hoerner, Deer Park, Wash., joined them in the winner’s circle after beating Andy Morris of Olympia, Wash.

Northwest division racers head to Washington for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., will host the series June 16-18.

The 2006 Hemi Showdown at Mission Raceway Park
In May 2001 the drag racing world witnessed one of the greatest Hemi Super Stock showdowns of all time. Now five years later the quickest and fastest cars on the planet return to the place where it all began, Mission Raceway Park.

The 2006 race-within-a-race features a new format where all the cars run full sessions with the two quickest coming back for all the marbles. They call it 'Chicago-Style' match racing, and it's seldom been seen in this area.

The Mission event promises to be another great one as the favorite West Coast Hemi Team from Modesto California comes back one more time to see just how quick and fast they can go on the one strip where history could happen.

Lead by former NHRA National Record Holder Harry Holton driving the legendary 'Har-Cuda' (photos), one of the things on his mind is the elusive chance to be the very first under 8.50. This car has run deep into the fifties here, so that science-fiction-like number is not out-of-the-question.

Now running under the classification SS/AH the big Cudas and Darts run heads-up, stick cars against automatics, and here at Mission it gets even better as you can toss in Canadian vs. American, driver against driver, and of course, engine-builder against engine builder.

The other competitors in this high profile event include the other two West Coast Hemi team mates, 2003 Indy Hemi-Challenge Champion Jerry Jenkins and another former record holder, Michael Ogburn, both obviously running Holton power.

The 2005 Mission co-champion Mark Viera is coming back with his Holton-powered Dart along with the other '05 champ Norm Scott, the Oregon driver debuting an all new SS/HA Cuda here that once belonged to Eddie Smith of West Virginia Hemi fame.

Another hitter to watch will be the Heli-Hemi Dart of John Rains, coming here with a brand new Wescott Hemi under the hood, and the team who won The Idaho Hemi Shootout at Boise's Firebird Raceway just three short weeks ago, Jon and Cal Percy and their gorgeous light weight Plymouth Savoy.

The Canuck fans will have plenty to cheer for as Mission's very own Jim Isherwood (pictured) will bring his bumper-dragging Hemi to test the MRP bite and don't forget Peter Wille of Victoria whose 4-speed Cuda could surprise more than a few here this weekend.

Those are the confirmed entries at this date, and who knows if more may show. Any way you look at it, all eyes will be on the big bad Hemis when they pull out at the end of each session of Super Stock. Will history be made this weekend at MRP? Don't let next week's headlines make you regret not being here to see it happen!

Lordco B.C. Nationals Drag Races Roll Into Mission

Mission, B.C., May 26, 2006 – It’s the time of year that every drag racing fan waits for, when the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series returns to town.

It’s the Lordco B.C. Nationals at Mission Raceway Park from Friday, June 2 through Sunday, June 4, and the biggest NHRA drag race in Canada, also the biggest motorsport event in B.C., will have something for every fan of the world’s fastest form of racing.

Topping the list are the awesome Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars, 4,000-horsepower monsters that run the quarter mile in 5 seconds at over 260 mph! Some twenty of these cars are entered, each looking for a spot in their respective 8-car fields.

Canadian drivers, as always, are expected to challenge strongly with a few entered in each type of car. Look for Tim Nemeth’s new funny car from Chilliwack to be joined by his new teammate in last year’s car, Nathan Sitko from Edmonton, while veteran John Evanchuk, also from Edmonton, always puts on a show in his gorgeous Firebird.

The action will be non-stop at the Lordco B.C. Nationals, and when the dragsters and funny cars take a break, hundreds of the best sportsman racers in B.C. will take on the invaders from Alberta and the West Coast of the U.S. in several different eliminator categories, vying for their share of the nearly $140,000 US in cash and contingency awards posted.

One of those categories is the wild, wheelstanding muscle cars of Super Stock Eliminator, and as an added bonus, a race-within-a-race called the West Coast Hemi Shootout will see the baddest of them all, the Chrysler Hemi-powered Barracudas and Darts, in 150-mph combat on the ultra-quick Mission quarter-mile, fighting for their share of $5,000 in prize money. At least ten of these entertaining cars are expected at Mission.

It’s three days packed with racing action, starting each morning, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at 9:00 am. The feature Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars have qualifying sessions at 3:00 pm Friday, and 1:00 and 4:00 pm Saturday, and their first round of eliminations goes Sunday at noon.

Friday’s admission of just $10.00 includes pit pass, while Saturday and Sunday admission is $20.00 each day, plus $5.00 for pit pass. Children 12 and under are admitted for free when accompanied by an adult.
