Sunday April 8, 2007 First bracket race beats the rain
The weather holds long enough to complete the first bracket race of the 2007 season.

Mission's Vicki Strell won Super Pro over Steve Lowe of Langley after getting back in after an apparent semifinal loss. It was a tough break for Delta's Ken Woelke who ran a 9.999 on his 10.00 dial after Strell fouled with a -.004 red light. Unfortunately for Woelke his '67 Chevy Pickup is only legal to 10.00, and although such close runs are often allowed with a warning during time trials, are subject to a DQ in eliminations.

In a double breakout final Strell's Chevy powered '71 Demon went .031/10.239/131.46 on her 10.25 dial while the '68 Camaro of Lowe ran .029/10.936 on his 10.95 number. Thirteen cars ran round one.

Pro saw thirty one entries go into round one with Aldergrove's Jim Crawford taking the victory over 2006 track champion Chris Stone who drew an uncharacteristic -.011 red light. Crawford's '81 Camaro ran .091/10.092/132.82 on his 10.10 dial-in.

Burnaby's Carlo Briglio won over eighteen other drivers in Sportsman, his '75 Camaro going .027/13.399/102.88 on a 13.37 to defeat Mission's Lorne Ridley, the 2002 Division champion who broke out with a .007/13.542 on his 13.58.

The only two entries in Motorcycle were both eight second runners with Al Omond of Surrey taking his turbo '94 ZX9 Kawasaki to victory with an 8.564/154.58 run after defending track champion Kevin Brennan fouled away an 8.92 with a -.009.

The two guys who fought it out for the 2006 MRP Hot Rod title met in today's final with the 2006 champ Bill Clifford wheeling his '27 Ford T to victory over Martin Dykstra in his radical 1914 C-Cab. The win was a personal one for Clifford after suffering a serious eye injury here Friday night. The Chilliwack driver went .037/11.052/112.96 as his Rosedale competition broke out with a .089/12.914 on his 12.93.

Junior Dragster featured ten entries, nine of which were running under nine seconds. 2006 track champion Holly Clark came out on top, the Rosedale B.C. driver taking her '06 Creative 'Hollinator' to the win over Burnaby's Kaelyn Bollinger who was driving the TestandTune.com '96 Prestige dragster. Clark dialed an 8.90 then ran a .014/8.918/71.41 as Bollinger drew a -.130 foul.

Come back here tomorrow for a complete photo feature of action from all three days, and don't forget the next MOPAC Street legal race this coming Friday April 13, followed by another on April 20 along with the next big weekend of action April 21/22 that will feature the season opener for the Canada West Doorslammers, Super Shifters, Super Combo, and the big trucks of the NHRDA.

Saturday April 7, 2007 Sayer (left) & Munson win Gold Cards

Both delayed MRP Gold Card races were held here today with Sportsman class racer John Sayer of Port Coquitlam taking the 2005 edition and Pro Bracket world finalist from Sechelt, Curtis Munson, winning the 2006 race.

A total of 19 cars were on hand for the 2005 race that saw Sayer, in his bright purple '68 Dart, take on former Super Pro world champion Martin Rachel in the final. Sayer's foot-breaking .004 light was the difference as his 13.052/100.32 on a 13.00 dial got him by Rachel's .029/10.627/124.53/10.60 dial.

Seven racers competed in the 2006 race that featured a rare car vs. motorcycle final round. Munson's '81 Malibu went .025/11.079/119.61 on an 11.10 dial, but the breakout didn't matter as the one they call Wonder Woman, Anita Cunningham pulled a red bulb -.010.

Not a lot of racers on hand for this early season, long holiday weekend race, but for those who were here, they enjoyed a record eight rounds of time trials.

Quickest and fastest car on site was the the new Mundies Towing TAD driven by Richmond's Shawn Cowie who ran his first fives second runs, a 5.75 and a 5.71, in the former Hillary Will dragster.

Racing goes tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. and we'll have all kinds of photo coverage and results tomorrow night and Monday.
