After a Saturday night session night that ended prematurely due to an oil down, the seven drivers representing the Nostalgia Funny Car Association came out here today and simply shook the ground with the greatest single day of performance in the short history of this category.

With two spots remaining in the very exclusive eight member Five Second Club it was all but a given that one or both spots would be filled here today, but nobody guessed the shocking outcome.

Round one began with veteran Terry Capp from Edmonton lining up beside Lee Jennings who clocked a 6.565/189.87. The Capp/Jenner/Hodgson/ Leong/Papernick...and more 'Bubble Up'' 1978 Trans Am claimed spot number seven with a stellar 5.922/231.89.

Next up was the race that all the locals had been waiting to see; Bucky Austin vs Arizona's Mike Savage in the Speed Sport '70 Cuda. After a 6.00 last evening in conditions not as good as today everybody held their breath for Hitter to become number eight.

In an instant it was done, the Fife WA driver flying to the quickest run in history - a stunning 5.916/239.17! But we had seen more. The other scoreboard flashed up another awesome number and the win light, as Savage had made this the first side-by side-five ever with a 5.98 at a booming 243.17!! Reaction times a .178 for Austin, a quicker .102 for Savage.

Then everybody began asking each other who made it into the eight spot?

It didn't take long to decide as since Savage's numbers came up on the computer first, he would get it. To say Bucky was dejected was an understatement. After the race he spoke not of the run but of "letting down my crew". A classy comment from a classy guy.

Savage said he can't wait to come back and was not only thrilled with his performance here, but fell in love with MRP.

Round two saw Savage go 6.035/242.45 as Steve Romanazzi made his best lap here and was retired with a 'mere' 6.13/231.12. Capp singled to a 9.42/82.50.

The final was a great drag race. The sun low in the sky, Capp layin down yet another giant burnout before firing the shot heard round the nitro nostalgia world lighting up the boards with an unbelievable 5.853/249.03! Unofficial word was that this would make his round one 5.922 the new NFCA record.

Capp was quoted saying "We're a proud Canadian Team" in an interview we'll have complete on video here later this week.

The other car on hand was Top Fuel Motorcycle pilot Andy Beauchemin licensing in Tim Stevenson's "Tachman" Mustang from Alberta. They ran great with some six second 200 mph passes.

The new TPR Silverado was on it's second or third race and had a best of 6.835/190.92 in round two here. Syvertsen had John Scalpi here but was not a factor. Test n Tune notes:

Even more nitro is on hand as the Lavoie clan is here with their front-motored injected nitro dragsters as well as two more we're not familiar with, but what look like awesome rides! Greg Lawrence is here from Oregon with his very quick rear engine nitro car...Jody York rode out a massive boomer at 300 ft on his one run today with the fuel bike. A big flash of flame left the motor junk, but he says he'll be ready tomorrow as we see a stellar field of nitro hogs in the pits already, including at least one impressive team from Oregon who we've never seen at MRP before. Many are saying there may well be a dozen here by morning! Top Fuel rider Andy Beauchemin is wheeling the Tachman '71 Mustang nitro flopper out of Alberta...legendary artist Kenny Youngblood is here too! Bring your 'Blood' art out Saturday or Sunday to have signed by one of the greatest names in the history of the sport.

Unfortunately a late day oildown put an early end to today's testing with over a dozen fast cars left sitting in the lanes. Tomorrow is gonna be unreal...bring your bug spray and get ready for nitro at night at MRP.

Update! CPSA to feature race number two of three race 2007 Series
The Canadian Pro Street Association is ready to run race number two of their three race 2007 Summer Series. As at the Eaton Pro Mod show just two weeks ago, you'll see three classes:
  • Hillers Engine Pro Street
  • JS Powersports Outlaw 10.5
  • Bowtie Auto Restoration/Performance Parts Center Open Comp

The trio basically mirrors similar PSCA classes. It's a welcome addition to northwest street scene that also encompasses the Northwest Pro Street Association staging a similar street car race series in Washington.

The first CPSA race of the year came together in a big way just two weeks ago and featured one of the best shows in the northwest this year. This time however the three winners will be running for the only street car NHRA 'Wally' in the northwest this year.

The CPSA race will be a great part of what promises to be a great weekend of drag racing at MRP!

Nitro Funny Cars Highlight NHRA National Open at Mission

Mission, B.C., July 9, 2007 – It’s become a mid-summer tradition at Mission Raceway Park, and the NHRA National Open Presented by Lucas Oil Products of Canada this weekend will have something for every taste in drag racing.

Heading up the program is the first appearance at Mission, and in Canada, of the Nostalgia Funny Car Association from California competing in the “Nitro Funny Car Showdown,” presented by VP Racing Fuels and RJ Enterprises. In the 1970s, there were hundreds of flip-top nitro-fueled Funny Cars (versus today's few dozen) barnstorming their way across North America, running what were then called Match Races. The spirit of those free-wheeling days continues at Mission this weekend, as a large group of these period-authentic ground-pounders attempt to qualify for an eight-car field.

Among the many entries are crowd favourite Bucky Austin from Tacoma, and Canadian legend Terry Capp driving the famous “Bubble-Up” Firebird from Edmonton. If you are old enough to remember those days, or would just like to see what Nitro Funny Cars were like in their heyday, this is a show not to be missed.

Also snorting nitro fuel are the fastest motorcycles in the world, and ten Nitro Harleys will be on hand to scorch the Mission quarter-mile at 200 mph in six seconds, if you can imagine that level of daring.

Coming from Alberta are eight of the wildly popular nostalgia Funny Cars of the International Blown Alcohol Association, laying down crowd-pleasing smoky side-by-side burnouts and seven-second runs.

Western Canada is a hotbed for the modern alcohol-fueled dragsters and funny cars, and many of B.C. and Alberta’s fastest cars will be on hand in a unique racing format that will see the quickest of each type of car face off for all the prize money and a coveted NHRA “Wally” trophy on Sunday afternoon.

Those wanting a sneak preview of the action can come down to the Boston Pizza at the Mission Junction Shopping Centre this Friday July 13, where one of the Nitro Funny Cars will be on display and fired up at 7:00 pm, just to give you a little dose of nitro thunder. This is free to all.

It’ll be an action-packed weekend, with something for every racing fan. Gates open Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 am. The Nitro Harleys and the alcohol-fueled cars will qualify at 5:00 and 8:00 pm Saturday, while the Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars have two qualifying sessions Saturday – at 6:00 and 9:00 pm - and continue with eliminations at noon Sunday followed by all the other classes. Note that the racing program extends into the evening Saturday, so that fans can watch the nitro-powered Funny Cars after dusk, when the flames can be seen shooting out of their exhausts.

Admission on either Saturday or Sunday is $20.00, plus $5.00 for pit pass. Children under 12 are free with an adult.

Points Leader Romanazzi Leads NFC's To Mission Raceway Park
NFC's Invade Lucas Oil NHRA Canadian National Open

Nostalgia Funny Cars will descend upon Mission Raceway next weekend to participate in the two day Lucas Oil NHRA Canadian National Open at Mission Raceway Park in Mission, B.C. Canada. This will be the first time that the Nostalgia Funny Car Association has raced as a group in Canada since it's inception and the Association is looking forward to racing at the Mission quarter mile.

Mission Raceway Park sits at sea level right next to the Fraser River and is home of the most outrageous air and track conditions imaginable. Many records have been set and reset over the years at this one of a kind track. Conditions at this track could be the best chance for the Nostalgia Funny Car Association Teams to make it into the last two spots in the Auto Meter AA/FC 5 Second Club.

Canada will be represented by Mike Grekul piloting Tim Stevenson's "Tachman" Mustang bodied Nostalgia Funny Car along with Terry Capp piloting the Ron Hodgson owned, Gordon Jenner and Roland Leong tuned, "Bubble Up Pacemaker" Trans Am bodied Nostalgia Funny Car. Capp has already run in the 6.0s earlier this year at the Nostalgia Nitro Shootout in Fontana CA, when he completed his license and set low elapsed time of the event with a 6.09.

The "Northwest Hitter" Bucky Austin will also be in attendance in the Plueger and Austin Arrow bodied Nostalgia Funny Car. Austin who ran a shut off pass of 6.13 @ 177 at the Northwest National Open earlier this year is another contender expected to hit the 5's in quick fashion.

Sean Dale in the Dale Family's "Shakey Situation" Charger bodied Nostalgia Funny Car will also be in attendance. Dale's best pass to date was a 6.52 at the 2nd Annual Old Tucson Dragway Reunion earlier this year.

Mike Savage in Jim Broome's "Speed Sport" Cuda bodied Nostalgia Funny Car is fresh off of back to back runner up finishes at the 19th Annual Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals and the 5th Annual NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion. Savage's best pass came at the Hot Rod Nationals where he was #1 Qualifier with a very stout 6.08.

Steve Romanazzi will also make the trek north to Mission to compete. Romanazzi in his Donnie Couch tuned "Warrior" Vega bodied Nostalgia Funny Car is the points leader going into the Lucas Oil Canadian National Open. Romo's best pass came at the 49th Annual March Meet earlier this year with a 6.03 pass. He won the March Meet and was Runner Up at the Nostalgia Nitro Nationals. Another contender for one of the last two spots on the Auto Meter AA/FC 5 Second Club.

Lee Paul Jennings in the Jennings Family's "Code Red" Challenger bodied Nostalgia Funny Car rounds out this very stout field of Nostalgia Funny Cars. Jennings was the winner of the Nostalgia Nitro Shootout in April and has posted his best time of 6.14 at the March Meet this year. Jennings is the 5th member of the Auto Meter AA/FC 5 Second Club.

The Lucas Oil NHRA Canadian National Open will be held next weekend, July 14th and 15th, at Mission Raceway Park, Mission B.C. Canada. Qualifying will be on Saturday the 14th at 6:00pm and 9:00pm. Eliminations on Sunday will be Sunday at noon, 2:00pm, and 4:00pm.

The gates open at 8:00am both days and tickets are $25.00 a piece (including pit pass).
