SEVERANCE, THOMPSON SCORE WINS AT MISSION RACEWAY PARK

MISSION, B.C. - Although weather threatened to cut racing short all weekend, winners were crowned today at the Lordco BC Nationals, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Champions were lead by Joey Severance, Spanaway, Wash., in Top Alcohol Dragster and Clint Thompson, Klamath Falls, Ore., in Top Alcohol Funny Car. It was the first win of the year for both of them.

Severance had qualified in the No. 3 spot and beat Richmond's Shawn Cowie on a hole-shot in the final. Severance covered the quarter-mile in 5.357 seconds at 269.54 mph. Cowie's run was quicker, 5.366 seconds at 269.29 mph, but Severance had a better reaction time which put him at the finish line first. In the semis, Cowie took out No. 1 qualifier Duane Shields of Boulder City, Nev.

Thompson carried his No. 1 qualifying effort all the way to the winner's circle. In the final, he took on second-place qualifier Sean O'Bannon of Ontario, Calif. Thompson's 5.682-second, 258.02 mph run was just enough to cover O'Bannon's 5.691-second, 257.06 mph shot.

North Vancouver racer Rob Harrison, who was the top qualifier, scored the win in Comp Eliminator after knocking out Pat Byron, Hoquiam, Wash. In Super Stock, Don Thomas, Spruce Grove, Alb., grabbed the win in his '04 Grand Am, beating Norm Lapointe, Edmonton, Alb., in his '06 Cobalt. Stock Eliminator racer Jeff Lane, North Bend, Wash., drove his '96 Corvette to the win around David Rastad of Maple Ridge wheeling a '77 Firebird. Chilliwack's Stefan Kondolay, a former division champion, earned the win in Super Comp over Earl Cunningham, Bonney Lake, Wash.; Lindsey Larson, University Place, Wash., got the win in Super Gas after beating Chris Cannon, Bothell, Wash.; and Tony Hernandez took his '66 Nova to the win by taking out Nick Cannon, Bothell, Wash. The Top Sportsman win went to Robert Matthews, Gig Harbor, Wash., driving a '67 Nova, when he defeated Chilliwack resident Bill Kondolay in his '04 Cavalier. Mike Henderson, Tacoma, Wash., knocked off J.R. Leerkamp, Olympia, Wash., in the Top Dragster final and in Sportsman Motorcycle, Buff Kobs, Coeur D'lene, Idaho, rode his '95 Kawasaki around Jeff Haven, Yakima, Wash., for the title.

FIELDS SET AT MISSION RACEWAY PARK'S LORDCO BC NATIONALS

MISSION, B.C. - Qualifying is complete at the Lordco BC Nationals, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, at Mission Raceway Park. After two additional qualifying passes, Duane Shields, Boulder City, Nev., stayed atop the Top Alcohol Dragster field and Klamath Falls, Ore., racer Clint Thompson remained No. 1 in Top Alcohol Funny Car. In fact, Stock Eliminator is the only category that had a new No. 1 qualifier from Friday's initial rounds.

Shields's 5.231-second, 272.80 mph pass was more than enough to cover No. 2 qualifier Randy Eakins's 5.307-second run at 268.41 mph. Eakins also failed to improve on Friday's run. Richmond's Shawn Cowie did improve just slightly and remained in the fourth qualifying spot. Bill Edwards Jr. of Sumas, Wash., and Leo Grocock of Mission failed to make the eight-car eliminations field after qualifying in the No. 11 and 12 spots, respectively.

Thompson's 5.626-second, 257.51 mph pass also stood as the best effort. Sean O'Bannon, Ontario, Calif., remained No. 2 and Chilliwack racer Tim Nemeth dropped from to the No. 3 position to No. 5.

North Vancouver resident Rob Harrison is the No 1 qualifier in Comp Eliminator and Kelly Voss of Coquitlam held on to the No. 1 spot in Sportsman Motorcycle. Jim Caughlin, Woodburn, Ore., is No. 1 in Super Stock, and Bill Edgeworth, Tacoma, Wash., edged out Vancouver, Wash., resident Tom Gaynor for the top spot in Stock Eliminator. Terry Spargo, Delta, B.C., set the pace in Top Sportsman and Greg Carlisle, Lake Stevens, Wash., heads up the Top Dragster contingent.

Several other local racers qualified in the top 10 for the weekend including Langley residents Bob Marshall (No. 4 Comp Eliminator), Rick Pike (No. 9 Super Stock), and Rash Dhalliwal (No. 6 Top Sportsman); Surrey residents Martin Zazula (No. 2 Top Dragster) and Al Omond (No. 7 Sportsman Motorcycle); and Kevin Brennan of Chilliwack (No. 8 Sportsman Motorcycle).

Racing continues Sunday at Mission Raceway Park. Gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations start at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round of eliminations at noon.

General admission tickets for the Lordco BC Nationals are $20. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. Pit passes are available for $5.

TOP ALCOHOL RACERS HEAD TO MISSION FOR FIRST NHRA NORTHWEST DIVISION LUCAS OIL SERIES EVENT

MISSION, B.C. - NHRA Northwest division racers will converge on the quarter-mile dragstrip at Mission Raceway Park for the Lordco B.C. Nationals, May 23-25, to continue their quest for points leading to divisional and national championships. The race is also the first in-division opportunity for racers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Brandon Johnson comes into Mission Raceway Park leading in the Top Alcohol Dragster points. The former division champion from Shelton, Wash., scored an out-of-division win in Chandler, Ariz., to put him ahead of Richmond's Shawn Cowie. Cowie has been to two out-of-division events, in Chandler and in Tucson, Ariz., and lost in the first round of both races.

Defending division champion, Thomas Bayer of Fontana, Calif., continues to wheel the Steve and Patty Federlin-owned entry. Before retiring from driving at the end of 2006, Steve Federlin had earned four division titles, including three straight in Top Alcohol Dragster. In his current role of owner/tuner, Federlin powered Bayer, who is a veteran drag racer but was new to the Top Alcohol ranks, to a division championship. So far this year, the team has only been to two NHRA national events where they went to the first and second rounds. Bayer won this race a year ago.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Sean O'Bannon, Alta Loma, Calif., leads the points after going to the semis in Chandler and losing in the first round in Tucson. Klamath Falls, Ore., racer Clint Thompson is in second place in the point standings after a runner-up finish in Chandler. Reigning division champ Brian Hough also attended the race in Chandler but was ousted in the first round. In 2007, Hough earned his third division Top Alcohol Funny Car crown.
NHRA Northwest division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will head to Kent, Wash., for the next race. Pacific Raceways will host the series June 20-22.
